A successful job search requires you to be proactive, positive and professional. This process can be tough but you can also learn a lot about yourself and develop a strong professional network along the way. We have identified three key areas that in addition to online applications can enhance your chances of getting an interview.

Steps to take for a successful job search

Be proactive

Don’t wait for jobs to be posted. Compose a list of companies you are most interested in and reach out directly to introduce yourself and inquire about any upcoming employment opportunities.  A well written email outlining your interest in the company and the value you may bring can go a long way

Network

Having a direct contact within an organization lends incredible value to your job search and can lead to your resume getting in front of a Hiring Manager before a resume sent via an online posting. Networking doesn’t have to be done at a networking-specific event which can be intimidating. It can be as simple as emailing a decision maker at one of your target organizations and asking about setting up an informational interview.  Should your invitation be accepted, it is imperative that you be prepared: research the individual’s career history, understand their business and have a list of key questions. You may not immediately get a job from these meetings but at the very least you will have made a strong connection and when a job does arise, you will already have a foot in the door.

Apply to recruitment agencies

Professional networks take time to build and can be difficult to develop on your own. That’s where recruitment agencies come in. Recruiters have large networks and access to opportunities that are often not posted publicly by the companies that enlist their services. Treat a meeting with a recruitment agency like a job interview; present yourself in a professional and positive light.  It’s an additional avenue for your search and with the right agency you will only be presented for roles that align with what you are looking for and what you have to offer a company. The combination of these tips builds an approach to your search that is thorough and applicable to short term and long term career goals.
