Three Tips to Ace the Work Holiday Party

‘Tis the season for holiday work parties. Holiday parties are a great way to foster relationships between employees, show appreciation and build company spirit. An added bonus to the annual event is that you can use it as an opportunity to network and accelerate your career.

It’s no secret that the holiday party may have attendance list full of executives, managers and colleagues. People that you may not have exposure to on a daily basis will soon likely be feet away from you. This year, why not seize the moment for your career. To do so, you need a game plan. Check out our recruitment agency’s top tips on how to WOW your way to your next promotion and make a strong impression at the holiday party.

1. Do your research. The first thing you need to know is who will be attending, identify key players, what role they play and how they can assist you. If you don’t know them or have not met them face to face, you will want to introduce yourself and identify what role you play in the company. Identify the people you have relationships with and ask them to make an introduction. Think of them as your professional wing person, get a warm introduction, and take it from there.

2. Cultivate a personal relationship. There is a fine line when it comes to highlighting your key achievements/goals and giving your life story. The holiday party is not a place to directly discuss promotions, open jobs or business development. Highlight one or two achievements you have accomplished in your role, what you’re looking forward to next and then move on. Genuinely take an interest on who your key players are; ask open ended questions about their personal interests or favorite restaurant recommendations. Be mindful of their time; after 4-5 minutes, politely thank them for their time and excuse yourself.

3. Follow Up. It is important to note that your work doesn’t end when the party does. Set a reminder to follow up with people you met. It can be as simple as a thank you email, a LinkedIn connection or setting up a coffee date in the New Year. Be sure to include a personal touch for every follow up, something that will refresh their conversation with you.

We hope our recruitment agency’s tips help you enjoy and thrive at your office holiday party! For more great tips and info, check out the TDS Personnel blog. Wishing you a safe and joyous holiday season.
